Potentially life-threatening, bedsores are the most common type of nursing home abuse injury. They affect some 10% of all nursing home residents.
Caused by staff not giving adequate nutrients to nursing home residents who cannot eat or drink on their own (about one-third cannot). The resident may not have enough nutrients; may have an excess of specific nutrients; or may have a poorly balanced diet.

Infections are very common in nursing homes. Occasionally, they may be overlooked, misdiagnosed, or mistreated. Infections can also result in sepsis, which can lead to shock and death.
